Makar Sankranti: 14 or 15 January?
Calendars do not agree this year. The central government's restricted holiday list, as shown by timeanddate.com, gives Thursday 14 January. Drik Panchang, for New Delhi, gives Friday 15 January, because the Sun enters Makara late on 14 January and the holy time falls on the next day. Lohri follows the same split, 13 January by the first and 14 January by the second. Pongal is on 15 January in both. Follow your local panchang or temple for the day to observe.
Bank holidays in January 2027
The RBI has not yet published its 2027 holiday list. Its page shows 2026 only, so we cannot give you state-wise bank holidays for January 2027 yet. What we can say:
- Second and fourth Saturdays are bank holidays everywhere: that means 9 January and 23 January.
- Sundays are normally closed too: 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 January.
- Republic Day on 26 January is a national holiday.
Local holidays such as Pongal in Tamil Nadu or Makar Sankranti in some states will appear once RBI releases the list, and we will update this post then.
